Social Work in the NDIS

In the Australian NDIS Social Work brings a practical, therapeutic and person-centred approach to disability support. Social workers look at the whole picture, not only a person’s disability but also their mental health, relationships, living situation, stressors, supports, goals and the systems around them. Within the NDIS, social workers can provide therapy supports, functional assessments, evidence-based interventions and assistance to address the social, emotional and practical barriers affecting a participant’s wellbeing and daily life.

At Developing Lives Social Work is grounded in evidenced based interventions supported by Psychology and Positive Behaviour Support. This allows for a broader understanding of how mental health, trauma, the environment and support systems can interact and impact a person. This is especially valuable for participants with psychosocial disability where the NDIS focuses on improving functional capacity, independence, participation, relationship, and overall quality of life through recovery-oriented support.

Our social work approach may include psychosocial and functional assessments, mental health-informed support, recovery-oriented coaching, goal setting, service navigation, advocacy and practical strategies to strengthen stability and wellbeing. For participants, families and teams, this can also involve guidance during periods of stress, transition, crisis or increased support needs as well as helping different services work together in a more consistent and helpful way.
